The Argent RoomLens is a reactive resonator that disperses and refracts sound rather than passively damping or absorbing it. This allows the user to work with a room's advantages rather than fighting its defects. The only absolute rules governing the setup of the RoomLens are those imposed by the listening space itself; you will quickly find the positions that are ideal for your room. The following steps will help you to maximize your enjoyment of your RoomLens array.

1. Remove all other room treatments and be certain that you have set up your speakers to their best advantage consistent with your listening space.

2. Adjust the feet on the bases of the RoomLenses to allow clearance of 1/2" or more between the bottom of the base and the standing surface. On deep carpet, you might place a small square of plywood or other firm material under each foot.

3. A trio of RoomLenses (shown in solid black) is the standard configuration. Moving the center Lens forward or back from a position midway between the speakers and the front wall will focus the center image and extend the depth of the soundstage. The outboard Lenses will control the width of the soundstage and further refine the image.

4. An additional Lens directly behind the listening position may eliminate unwanted rear wall reflections and further refine the sound.

5. The Second Order RoomLens array adds a second pair of outboard Lenses in a "double wing" configuration. The second pair further "groom" the sound, and provide a surprisingly large improvement in the overall performance of the array. Place the second outboard Lens with the side of its base nearly touching the base of the first, and generally toed in relative to the first set. Experiment with different angles.

6. Pay particular attention to the apparent size of the soundstage and the presence or absence of acoustic anomalies at every stage of the adjustment process. If there is a major change in system components or a rearrangment of the furnishings in the room, a significant repositioning of the RoomLens array may be required. Recent research has provided some additional possibilities for configuration of the RoomLens Second Order array. These new configurations are shown in diagrams A, B, and C. Placement of the outboard pair of Lenses as shown in Fig. A has been found to add a greater degree of transparency and an opening up of the soundstage. After placing the Lenses as shown in the diagram, further refinement may be obtained by adjusting the distance and angle of the right and left pairs relative to the speakers as if each pair were a single unit. The arrangement shown in Fig. B has proven beneficial in controlling mid-bass "bloom". Place the Lenses as shown, and adjust the angle of the inner units relative to the speakers while varying the distance of the outboard Lenses from the listening position. Keep in mind that the amount of variation shown has been exaggerated for clarity. Small movements will often yield dramatic results. In a listening space with a pronounced bass "boom", an additional Lens may be placed directly behind the front center unit. Adjustments may be made by varying the distance between the units as shown in Fig. C. Once again, adjustments of a subtle nature will often yield dramatic results. Rest your ears from time to time to avoid experiential fatigue.
